Caving—also known as “spelunking” or “caving” in English—is an adventure activity involving the exploration of natural cave systems. Cavers (cave explorers) have been venturing into the earth’s hidden depths since the late 19th century in Europe. Today, people of all ages around the world enjoy this exciting sport, especially in Europe and North America. What makes caving truly special is its spirit of discovery—it's all about the thrill of exploring the unknown. In this modern age where satellite technology has mapped almost every corner of the Earth, caves remain one of the final frontiers. The desire to uncover untouched places may be one of the most primal instincts we possess. ▼About Gyokusendo Cave Okinawa, surrounded by coral seas and subtropical islands, is home to over 600 limestone caves. Among them, Gyokusendo stands as the largest. Formed over approximately 300,000 years, Gyokusendo stretches 5,000 meters in total and boasts over a million stalactites—making it one of the biggest caves in Japan. The first exploration and survey of this majestic cave was conducted by the Ehime University Academic Expedition Team. Over the course of seven years, starting in 1967, they overcame numerous obstacles to reveal the full extent of this enormous cave. Today, only 890 meters of the cave are open to the public, while the remaining 4,000+ meters are preserved as a protected research area.

• Requirements

  • For your safety, please follow the guide’s instructions throughout the tour. We cannot be held responsible for any accidents caused by failure to follow safety directions.
  • This caving tour takes you into a unique natural environment unlike everyday life. Please take extra care to ensure you are in good physical condition before participating.
  • Children between 6 and 9 years old must be accompanied by one adult per child.
  • This tour is guided in Japanese only. No interpretation in other languages is available.

• Restrictions

  • The following individuals may not join the tour: anyone under the influence of alcohol or hungover, pregnant individuals, and those with claustrophobia.
  • If you have any of the following medical conditions, please consult with a doctor in advance and notify us at the time of booking: heart, circulatory, or respiratory conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, or any other condition requiring regular medication. Please note that depending on the severity of your condition, we may not be able to accommodate your participation.
  • Insurance Information / Policy Name / Coverage Details Please note that we cannot assume responsibility for any incidents not covered by the insurance.
  • If a child under 5 years old participates, or the required adult supervision rule is not followed, we reserve the right to cancel your participation on the day of the tour. (Please note that no refunds will be given in such cases.)

• What to Bring

  • Please prepare the following items before your visit:
  • Swimsuit (Recommended, as some areas are up to 1 meter deep)
  • Rash guard or T-shirt (Nylon material is recommended)
  • Old socks you don’t mind getting dirty (To prevent blisters and adjust fit inside water shoes)
  • Plastic bag (For carrying wet swimsuits, etc.)
  • Nice to have! A waterproof camera or smartphone (We recommend using a waterproof case, as retrieving dropped items from the water can be difficult)

• Additional Info

  • If you will not be able to arrive by the designated meeting time, please contact Okinawa World in advance. If you do not arrive by the tour start time, your reservation will be cancelled out of consideration for other participants. Please note that no refunds will be issued in this case.
  • Free coin lockers are available for your use.
  • Admission to Okinawa World is not included in the tour fee. Please purchase a separate ticket if you wish to enter the park.
  • In the event of a typhoon or other unfavorable weather or conditions, the tour may be cancelled. If so, we will contact you by the day of the tour.
  • Please note that the tour may extend beyond the scheduled end time depending on conditions on the day.
