Caving—also known as “spelunking” or “caving” in English—is an adventure activity involving the exploration of natural cave systems. Cavers (cave explorers) have been venturing into the earth’s hidden depths since the late 19th century in Europe. What makes caving truly special is its spirit of discovery—it's all about the thrill of exploring the unknown. In this modern age where satellite technology has mapped almost every corner of the Earth, caves remain one of the final frontiers. The desire to uncover untouched places may be one of the most primal instincts we possess. ▼About Gyokusendo Cave Okinawa, surrounded by coral seas and subtropical islands, is home to over 600 limestone caves. Among them, Gyokusendo stands as the largest. Formed over approximately 300,000 years, Gyokusendo stretches 5,000 meters in total and boasts over a million stalactites—making it one of the biggest caves in Japan. The first exploration and survey of this majestic cave was conducted by the Ehime University Academic Expedition Team. Over the course of seven years, starting in 1967, they overcame numerous obstacles to reveal the full extent of this enormous cave. Today, only 890 meters of the cave are open to the public, while the remaining 4,000+ meters are preserved as a protected research area.
